ARTICLE:An ongoing study from the University of South Carolina has been tracking the stats on juvenile delinquency and arrests from 1997-2008. It appears a greater amount of young men are coming formally in contact with the justice system. Almost half of young black men would be arrested by 23, and 44% of Hispanic males would also see the same fate; and lest one chalks it up to race, white males were not far behind, with 40% of them entering the justice system. The study also found that the prevalence of arrests for females 18-23 also increased, however the variation between races were not as large; leading the pack was white females, where 20% were arrested by 23, 18% for black females, and 16% for Hispanic females.
With the United States having the highest incarceration rate in the world, perhaps it's not too shocking that a large percentage of our young will spend some time in the slammer. It certainly makes you wonder what the effect is on these record holding adolescents, not only psychologically, but economically as job and community opportunities diminish.
