Coffee May Boost Long Term Memory

The Guardian, Jan 2014

ARTICLE:
Remember that article that said Coffee Shop Sounds Stimulate Creativity? Well, looks like the brown brew is continuing to make more than just mornings more enjoyable. A new study claims that having coffee increases the brains ability to store and retrieve long term memories. People who had coffee before looking at images did better than their non caffeinated counterparts are correctly remembering/identifying images the following day. The caffeine group was 10% more likely to remember images than the placebo or non-coffee group. Scientists are unclear why exactly memory was improved, though one theory is caffeine stimulates a stress hormone in the brain, which helps with the formation of memories. If there is indeed a correlation, long term memory improvement can be added to a list of potential and known caffeine benefits, including resistance to Alzheimer's, longevity, and perking up for the day. While some are skeptical about the findings, it might not hurt to have another cup of joe.
