How Tablets Killed the Couch

Fast Company, 2013

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
When tablets and smart phones came on the scene it was clear they had irrevocably changed the way we live; and, perhaps in a small way, even the way our living room exists. With screens that are meant to be held anywhere, and in close proximity to our faces, the traditional living room layout of a TV against the wall and a couch facing it no longer makes sense for how we consume media. It seems were just realizing the furniture is going to have to adjust; lean back office chairs specially made for tablet use are coming in to the market (for almost a grand), and designers are creating moveable couch systems, where no piece is made to be anchored by a wall, TV or set floor design. To accommodate to tablet and phone viewing, design is moving out of unidirectional, rigid and one intentioned construction to be as flexible and free form as the technology that changed them.
