ARTICLE SUMMARY:
We often talk about FOMO in advertising strategy; the Fear of Missing Out that people feel if not constantly connected to their social networks, often through their phones. Social media has created this bizarre need and anxiousness in users when the see unread emails, unloved tweets or new notices on Facebook. Even if we know in our hearts these "updates" are likely Aunt Marge liking our old High School graduation photos, they suddenly become deeply significant to us, in a large part, it appears, because we feel they connect us to the world. MyLife.com released a study showing almost 60% of people are afraid they'll miss out on important life events if they aren't connected. But, with almost 30% of us logging in first thing when we wake up, it often smacks of addiction. It's for this reason half of us promise ourselves we'll log off, but less than 25% think they will physically be able to. Lots of good stats on our social media dependence. Nifty infographic, too.
