Well, this is a cool one; recent research found that a coffee shop--with the woosh of the espresso machine and background chatter-- creates the right amount of ambient noise to stimulate creativity (and maybe the smell of coffee beans helps, too). The Journal of Consumer Research found 70 decibels--about the noise level of a TV or coffee shop--increased productivity more than a room of 50 decibels. Extreme quiet tends to heighten our focus to the point where we can't see in the abstract, something needed for creativity to flourish. So, in response, Coffivity was created, a site much like the Christmas Yule log. Just hop on while you work and let the quiet bustle of a coffee shop lull you to creative inspiration and productivity. Only problem is it might just make you want to grab a cappuccino...
