New York Daily News, MAy 2013
ARTICLE SUMMARY:
In the CDC's first study of children between the ages of 3-17, they found one in five children are diagnosed with a mental disorder; and that childhood mental illness costs up to $247 billion in medical bills, juvenile justice and special education. The study concludes mental illness in children has climbed since 1994, but does not cite possible causes. On a side note, the number of children being diagnosed with ADHD is up a whopping 66% since 2000, which, coincidentally, accounts for the largest piece of reported childhood mental illness in the CDC's report. Maybe it's not so much more children are developing mental illnesses as our desire to classify childhood discovery and difficulties as "mental problems."
