Washington Post, May 2013
ARTICLE SUMMARY:In their annual report, Save the Children ranked different countries on a Mothers Index, determining which countries are the best and worse place to be a mother. Ranks were determined by the risk of maternal and infant death, the average number of years a child would be in school, gross income and participation of women in government roles. On the top of the list are the Nordic countries, while Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia are the worst. The U.S. fares well, despite the fact it has the worlds second-highest premature birth rate, and the highest first-day infant death rate in the developed world.
