Geography of Hate, Humboldt State
SITE SUMMARY:
Man, I love interactive maps. This next one comes to us from the fine geography students of Humboldt State University. They catalogued 150,000+ geocoded tweets (tweets tied to locations) to track words that were homophobic, racist or directed towards those with disabilities to see where they fell in terms of geography. Some findings: Homophobic tweets come in a higher amount that racist tweets, places with high concentrations of homophobic tweets didn't always mean high racism tweets as well, and the South East needs to mellow out. Some terms are a bit dated and it doesn't include sexist tweets or mental disability hate speech (just physical, in the term of "cripple"), but interesting nonetheless.
