Highly Religious People Less Motivated by Compassion

Science Daily, April 2013

ARTICLE SUMMARY:
Despite the title, this social study is not saying that religious people are less compassionate (you're good eggs), but rather, compassion is less likely to be a motivator for them to help their common man; for the religiously inclined, factors like doctrine, communal identity and reputation are more likely to be their motivators to help rather than their feelings of empathy or compassion for a person. Non or less religious people, by comparison, were more motivated by their emotion or empathetic feelings for the person in need. This study challenges widely held assumptions that charity and compassion is linked to generosity.
