ARTICLE SUMMARY:A new study suggests that Westerners IQ's are on the decline since the Victorian Era, losing an average of 14 IQ points. It's hypothesized that the decline could be attributed to the fact that more women of higher IQ's are having fewer children than women of lower intelligence. The association between intelligence and fertility has been shown repeatedly in research over the last century. In addition, the more supportive our environments are (more concentrated population and access to food) has made our genetic selection more relaxed. Other research suggests a rise in IQ's since the 1940s, but since education and nutrition have improved, these environmental factors may be masking the genetic delcine in intelligence.
