Mustache Mania: Our Fascination with the Stache

LA Times, June 2013

ARTICLE:
As you may know, we're officially in Movember, a month dedicated to mustache appreciation by raising funds and awareness for men's health by growing out your facial hair. The movement has grown substantially in the last few years, with brands like Just for Men clamoring to be a sponsor. But beyond November the furry faced trend seems to be growing among men; about 60% of men have mustaches or beards today, compared to 43% in 1993, according to Just for Men, which reports seeing revenues for it's facial line nearly double in the last decade. The trend has even jumped off of faces and into creative spaces, with Mustache Parties, handlebars showing up on cards, pillows, mugs, pacifiers, even the ride sharing service Lyft features a pink mustache on the front of their cars (for some reason). So why the popularity? No concrete findings, but I think the nostalgia we're feeling as a society, which has caused a rebirth in interest like old cocktails and vintage/retro everything, has also caused a resurgence in interest for grooming habits of yore (many of the artistic mustaches you see are styled after Victorian or "hipster" designs). Another possible reason is the mustache standing for the epitome of masculinity--think Tom Selleck, Sean Connery, Hulk Hogan, Ron Burgandy, or Ron Swanson. And in an era of changing gender roles, rising rates of single fathers and non-married bachelors, a beard of mustache can single both to the wearer and the viewer that this guy is nothing but a manly man, baby.
