Girls With Anorexia Show Characteristics of Autism

A study has shown some girls with anorexia have many characteristics often associated with autism, an interesting finding which could help in creating more effective treatments for people with eating disorders. Research found girls with anorexia have a number of above average autistic traits, as well as above average interest in numbers and order, and below average scores in empathy. And, both autism and anorexia focus on a rigid behavior set, fixation on numbers and details and self focus. Oftentimes for men and women with eating disorders, other underlying mental conditions are overlooked as the focus becomes on finding solutions to the physical manifestations; malnutrition and food intake. The research is particularly helpful because it means potentially more effective treatments by shifting this obsessive number interest into a different systematic topic other than weight, as well as a tailored approach in communication and expression to those with eating disorders, much in the same way one responds to autistic behavior.
