What's Behind Falling Teen Birth Rates?

Pew Research Center, May 2013

DATA SUMMARY:
It was reported last week that the birth rate among 15-19 year olds has dropped to a record low among all ethnicity's, and fell the most among Hispanic teens, from 75.3 girls out of 1,000 in 2007 to 49.4 girls out of 1,000 in 2011. The overall drop has actually been continuing for the last three decades, and the study found the flailing economy played a part in a more significant drop, as well as shifting attitudes about pregnancy in teen years. For example, in a cultural shift, first generation Hispanic teens generally didn't view teen pregnancy as a "bad thing for society" as much as third generation Hispanics did, and by a large margin (70% to 90%). It is predicted, however, that once the economy picks up, pregnancy across all ages will rise with it.
