A Delicate Balance: Being Gay and So.E.Asian in America

Vice, June 2013

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Not as heavy as some of the articles on here, and reads like a story; this is a rather interesting piece interviewing a lesbian Indian girl going under the pseudonym Bharati, and her sham of a marriage with a gay Indian boy. A wonderful cultural piece looking at the relationship of marriage and homosexuality in south east asian culture, while living in a more open American society. It's a mix of acceptance cloaked in denial, as the Indian value of collective identity over individual identity puts gays in a very delicate position. If you like anthropology or are curious about what it means to be gay in other countries, read on.
