While traditional jobs may be more difficult to come by, freelance employment is growing. One in three American's are "contingent" employees, and some predict that by 2020, freelancers will be half of the market, or eclipsing the number of full time employees.
But don't think these hired guns are desperately taking short term gigs in lieu of that full time job that they'd prefer; a study done by Forbes and odesk, the world's largest online workspace, found many pursue freelance work because they have a certain entrepreneurial mindset to be their own business, and are seeking freedom in their employment. In fact, one Boston company that places freelancers goes by the name OhYouHero, which, it says, exists to help freelance heros get hired, not hustled. With more parents (both men and women) battling it out for more flexible work schedules (or working remotely), 58% of Millennial's referring to themselves are entrepreneurs and more and more small business owners cropping up, we're creating a workforce of agile, nimble, self minded employees that work for themselves; a mindset that may have been borne out of the sharing economy, where individuals became their one person business with platforms like airbnb, ZipCar, etsy and TaskMonkey. And with the growth of staffing services like eLance and oDesk rising to meet this demand, the hungry self starter is finding it easier to find the perfect, flexible job they want...at least, for awhile.
