For Migrants, the New Land of Opportunity is Mexico

New York Times, September 2013

ARTICLE:
Perhaps you remember an article in July called Mexico: Less Babies, More Prada about how the low birth rate among 20-30 year old Mexicans is attributing to a flux of discretionary income, a lower rate of poverty and higher demand for luxury goods. It appears the growing economy is attracting migrant interest, reversing the trend of people fleeing Mexico as the foreign born population there nearly doubled between 2000 and 2010. According to data in both Mexico and the US, more American's have been added to the population of Mexico in the past few years than Mexicans to the US population.
The competitive manufacturing industry in Mexico is attracting a lot of interest from workers who have found themselves shuttered in Europe or China because of economic woes or costs. But the migrants aren't just workers; chasing Mexico's manufacturing strength are executives as well as laborers; requests for residency has grown by 10% since November.  This mix of socioeconomic classes is especially important in establishing Mexico as a more economically successful and diverse country. With immigrants coming to Mexico from around the world, it will become more ethnically diverse, and change socially and culturally as well as economically.

If this trend of economic and social success continues, issues like illegal immigration from Mexico to America and the power of the drug cartels and crime rates may diminish, as a thriving economy pushes both into obscurity. Definitely a country to watch.
