How Many Slaves Work For You? Your Slavery Footprint

SURVEY:
How many slaves work for you?
This site actually launched last year, but I'm sure I am not the only one who hasn't seen it yet. If I told you 37 slaves work for me you'd think I was bonkers. But unfortunately, human trafficking is there, even if it isn't readily visible or obvious. A large part of slavery happens in supply chains--to create that smart phone, running shoes or snacks you're enjoying. It's no small number, either; 27 million people are enslaved in the world--the population of New Zealand and Australia combined. And if you think it doesn't happen on American soil, think again. Men, women and children are forced into unpaid labor or sex work, numbering between 14,500 and 17,500...that are known of. Some sources cite that there are more slaves now than before the Civil War, or at any time in human history, costing just $90 (2008) for a slave today, compared to $40,000 in 1850.

A short survey of your buying habits and lifestyle reveal how many slaves work to create the items you enjoy. While it's very unlikely we'll all start buying free trade or boycotting (often the brands themselves don't know their raw materials are from slave labor, or don't care to notice), creating awareness and putting the pressure of accountability on our brands does help.
