ARTICLE:
The average American seems to be having a change in heart--or taste, rather--about their love affair for beer. The reigning champ for working stiffs, barbecues and college kids for the last 20 years is seeing a steady decline in market share to liquor and wine. This decline is especially high amongst younger drinkers and non-white drinkers. But why? There are a few factors at play, one being an increased awareness and ubiquitous information about our health and what we consume. The beer industry responded to beer calorie fears with their selection of light beers, but it still doesn't appeal as much as a glass of wine with potential health benefits mixed in those tannins, or even water, juice and tea, which has exploded in the last ten years. There's also economic factors (as always), liquor ads--which only started to air in 1996--are working, and, perhaps just so simple, our taste preferences are changing.
