ARTICLE SUMMARY:
Though it may not feel like it, we have more leisure time than before; the average hours spent at work in a week has dipped to 33.7, down from the 38.2 experienced for the working class in 1962, making an almost 12% drop. It's not the result of less strenuous labor or generous workplaces--rather we're seeing a surge in part time jobs from working mothers, and those working part time who have been hit by a hard economy and low job prospects. Another reason is people staying in school longer or going for more degrees, coupled with retiring earlier. This creates a lower average work hour over ones lifetime.
And what do we do with those 42 average hours of leisure time we had in 2012 (compared to the 35 available in1965)? Mostly, watch TV.
