Darkest Period in the History of American Prisons

The Atlantic, June 2013

SUMMARY:
A deep look into a broken federal prison system from the standpoint of inmate care. The article goes through several prisons brought to federal judges for inadequate prisoner care (in one Florida prison there was only one part time psychiatrist in the entire facility, with interns doing the majority of mental health screenings), particularly in regards to mental health assessment and treatment. A good reminder that once someone is put away they don't go away, and what the ethical implications of neglect are, as well as the fiscal ones (one prison averaged 600 Emergency Room visits from violence and suicide attempts, while a similar facility averaged only 10). Not a very long read, but an involved one.
